Backup Best Practices: Building a Resilient Data Strategy

Simply encrypting your files is only half the battle. To ensure your digital legacy survives for the next 10, 20, or 50 years, you need a resilient strategy.

Here are the best practices for setting up YourKeep default protection.

1. The 3-Fragment Rule

When splitting your files, we recommend creating at least 3 fragments and requiring any 2 for recovery.

This means:

  • If one fragment storage location is compromised, your files cannot be decrypted.
  • If one fragment storage location is destroyed, you can still fully recover your files using the remaining two fragments.

2. Keep Storage Locations Independent

Do not store two fragments with the same company. For example, if you place Fragment A in Google Drive and Fragment B in Google Photos, a Google account lockout will lose both.

Instead:

  • Fragment A: Cloud Drive (e.g. Google Drive)
  • Fragment B: External SSD (offline/physical)
  • Fragment C: Independent Cloud (e.g. Dropbox / OneDrive)

3. Test Recovery Periodically

A backup is only as good as its restore process. We recommend performing a test recovery every 6 months:

  • Retrieve your fragments from their respective locations.
  • Entrypt them locally with your recovery phrase.
  • Verify that the restored documents open correctly.
